Martha Mondays: New York Crumb CakePosted by in Food
My pick for Martha Mondays was the New York Crumb Cake from March Living. OMG. This was amazing, I thought! I forgot to sprinkle powdered sugar on top, but it was good anyhow. Here’s the recipe:
3 1/2 c cake flour
2/3 c sugar
2/3 c brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
2 1/2 sticks butter, melted
1 1/2 sticks butter
2 1/2 cups cake flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 c sugar
2 eggs and 2 yolks
1 tsp vanilla
2/3 c buttermilk
powdered sugar for dusting
optional 1 cup blueberry jam (I used this)
Mix dry crumb topping ingredients together. Pour butter over it and mix with hands until it makes large clumps.
Preheat oven to 325 and grease a 9×13 pan. Beat butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add eggs and yolks and vanilla. Add dry ingredients, alternating with buttermilk. Pour batter in pan. Top with jam (if desired) then crumb topping. Bake for 1 hour.
Yum. The amazing part is this thing sat on the counter at my house for 5 days (covered) and did not diminish in moisture or texture, which I cannot believe. Everyone here loved this. I am saving this recipe and it goes on my “Martha’s Best of” list for sure. Super easy to make and moist, delicious and gorgeous. It was incredible.

Mine is in the oven right now as I type and it smells sooo good! I cant wait to try it. All that topping has to bring it over the top. I used my Vanilla Pear Jam in it. I’m so glad to hear it got such a high ranking from you. It was so easy to make!
Thanks for a GREAT pick! 🙂
Happy Martha Monday!
I wasn’t going to make because of all the sugar, and cake flour, but now I am going to have to. We don’t eat that many sweets. Do I have to use cake flour?
I made this last summer but didn’t take any pictures so I couldn’t blog it 🙁 It was from Martha’s baking book. It turned out very dense. My mother-in-law put it in the fridge (why do elderly people do that with everything?) and it dried out very quickly 🙁
Now that I’ve read your great review, I will certainly make this again 🙂
Was it the same recipe? Because I looked on her site to see if this was up and there was another crumb cake recipe there that was not the same as this one.
Yes. The cake flour is important to get the right texture.
Can’t wait to hear if you like it! Pear jam sounds yummy!
I made it and we really enjoyed it. Unfortunately I left your recipe at work so I used a different Martha recipe. It was a great pick. My results are up: http://www.perfectingpru.wordpress.com
I’m glad you liked it. I would have resent you the recipe though!
I saw the recipe too, Brette, and it is so on my list!! Actually, I want to make all of them! But my waistline says NO! Alene
You must adopt a policy of making then giving it away to get it out of the house. I couldn’t bear to part with this one though, it was so good!
Ack! I really wanted to make this but my son’s birthday was this weekend and I made a Martha Stewart cake instead. I’ll be posting about it in a day or two. I’m glad this turned out. I’ll have to put it on my to-do list.
We loved this. My husband loves this kind of cake and I make it gluten free for him. That means, I used a brown rice flour blend instead of the regular flour. You wouldn’t know.
I have a lot of readers who do GF and know some wonderful bloggers who blog about it. I’m glad it worked with the GF flour blend.
What cake did you make for his bday? How was it?
I took this to work and everyone LOVED it! It’s a keeper recipe! 🙂
It is a great sort of office food item I think. Glad it was a hit!
