Martha Mondays: One Bowl Chocolate Cake
Posted by in FoodThose of you who know my baking style know I ALWAYS make cakes in just one bowl. I never sift. So this cake fit into my philosophy. It’s from April Living. The cake is easy to make and you just dump it in and mix it.
3/4 c cocoa
1 1/2 c flour
1 1/2 c sugar
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
3/4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
2 eggs
3/4 c buttermilk
3/4 cup warm water
3 tbsp oil
1 tsp vanilla.
Easy. Mix, bake in two cake pans at 350. Mine took 25 min. The frosting is not as easy and involves melting chocolate:
2 1/4 cup powdered sugar
1/4 cocoa
6 oz cream cheese
1 1/2 sticks butter
9 oz melted bittersweet chocolate
3/4 cup sour cream.
I had just enough frosting with this, so don’t go overboard in filling the layer. It made a lovely looking cake and the frosting is really dense and provides nice coverage. I liked the cake (but it’s still not as good as my Gram’s mayo cake). The frosting was a bit sour almost, so I think I might not use all bittersweet chocolate. I did like the texture of it though.

This was a great pick Brette. I loved the cake. My mum loved the cake and so did everyone at work. I have even been asked to bake it for a party! Strangely I had a lot of frosting left over and used the right pans as I bought new ones! I thought the cake was lovely and that the sourness of the frosting was perfect.
I don’t sift either! This cake looks very tasty, but I’d love a gander at your grandma’s mayo cake. Sounds amazing!
This cake looks absolutely wonderful and I can’t wait to give it a try over the weekend! Anything with buttermilk, sour cream, and chocolate works for me! Thanks for sharing! I also appreciate the “one bowl” concept. I’m always game for saving a dirty bowl or dish.
Oh this looks sooo good – and easy! I see you posted the recipe this time. Can we do that now? I’ve posted Martha recipes previously, then second guessed myself :-0
That chocolate cake looks so good. And I love one-bowl recipes. Sometimes, I feel like a spend all weekend washing dishes. (I don’t have a dishwasher in my old kitchen.) I skipped this one after overindulging in birthday cake last weekend. But I’m saving this for my recipe files.
The bottom photo looks so good! I had been craving chocolate.
Sounds like an unusual combination of ingredients for the frosting . . .
Baking stuff never seems to fit in the dishwasher!
Sounds like it was a hit! How funny that you had lots left over and I had just enough! Maybe I like to use a lot!
I had alot of icing left also but I made cupcakes. I really didn’t care for the icing maybe because there were so many dishes to wash afterward. Everyone at work loved them though. I would love to try your Gram’s Mayo Cake.

Wow, it was so easy to make! I made mine into cupcakes (I have 2 year old) I like the frosting, it doesn’t have that sickly sweet buttery flavor that most frostings have…thanks for sharing the recipe
One bowl. Cake. Sold. Seriously. Sometimes I just crave cake.
Who doesn’t?
Glad you enjoyed it. The frosting was very different from most I thought.
