10 Things I’ve Learned from Martha
Posted by in General1. Celery tastes better peeled. Really.
2. How to seed a pomegranate. Martha says to score the skin into quarters, then pull it apart. You then whack the back of each quarter with a spoon, and the seeds come out. Who knew?
3. Beds are nicer when they are made. Making them still isn’t fun though.
4. Refrigerating cookies on the sheet before baking means they will spread less and retain a nice shape.
5. Packaging a gift beautifully makes it seem more special.
6. An organized home feels luxurious.
7. Stuffed cabbage is actually really good.
8. Salad dressing is easy to make and there’s no reason to buy it.
9. You can lose weight and still eat delicious, wonderful food.
10. Aluminum foil should never touch food. Use a layer of parchment paper in between.

Great list!
Stuffed cabbage. Really?
Really. I would never in a million years have made it, but Martha made her mom’s recipe on the show one day and I tried it. . I posted on Nov 12 about it (wordpress isn’t letting me generate a link, but if you click on Nov in the archives and then just scroll to the 12th you can see it). The cabbage doesn’t taste like cabbage and you cook it in a tomato sauce. It really very good.
I’ll check it out — thanks for the idea.
Why shouldn’t foil touch food? I’d be interested to hear the answer!
By the way, I really enjoy your blog. Check it out every day and even uploaded it to my Blackberry!
Martha’s explanation is that you then end up with aluminum in your food, at least at trace levels. And aluminum is linked to Alzheimer’s.
And I’m glad you enjoy it! Thanks for following along.
I love stuffed cabbage. Before we moved to our Little House, I never made the bed. Now I make it everyday. It is amazing how much nicer crawling into a made bed every night is! 🙂
it is a great list. I knew 3, 5, 8, and 9, but the others are new to me — and while I’ve never been especially seeking luxury, an organized home seems like a great idea to get, well, organizing. thanks Brette and Martha!
Great list, Brette. Learned something new with the aluminum foil tip. Learned something I already know (but struggle with) about the organized home. And learned something that I still cannot get myself to like – stuffed cabbage.
Thanks for the info!
I didn’t think I would like the cabbage, and was quite surprised that I did!
Martha knows her stuff!
I totally agree with the bed making. That’s why I wait to make my bed until night time. It’s just nice to get into a bed that’s all straightened out with smooth sheets and all.
I did not know that about aluminum foil! Ack. I’ve been ruining our food for years!
And I had no idea one could peel celery.
Loved this post.
When you peel celery, all those strings come off and what’s left is tender and easy to chew and sweeter somehow. It’s actually quite amazing.
Ohh, I’m excited to try making stuffed cabbage. And I love this list! Good that Martha has inspired you to learn so much. I agree, too, about the beds and the organized home. I only wish I were better at keeping on top of anything (maybe Martha has some words of wisdom about how not to beat yourself up when things fall apart?)
I was curious to see what the list would be–very down to earth. I also had not thought about the aluminum one, although I very rarely use foil anyhow. And I’ve always loved stuffed cabbage. The pomegranate one is great, now if she would teach me how to get mangoes away from the seed.
I am pretty sure she used a special mango cutter once on her show.
Hey, I think there’s a need for a second or a third list of things you’ve learned. I had no idea I should be peeling my celery! I wonder what other tips you could share with us…
1, 4 & 10…things I didn’t know but now I do! Thanks so much!
Number three, for sure! Was not aware of number one. I don’t like celery, so maybe I’ll give this a try and see if I like it better.
