Whitewashing Gone Wrong
Posted by in Home and DecoratingMartha had a section in September Living about whitewashing wood. I actually love the look of it and was inspired to try some myself. Now, I’ll admit up front I didn’t do much research into the hows of this.
I took a cabinet at the family lake house that is hideously orange. When we ordered it, it was described as “natural” color, but it definitely is orange. It needed help. We put it out in the sun and found some off-white pain. At first I thought I would just dry brush it on, but that didn’t work. So I ended up using a wet rag. It worked well in some places, but not others. I think the sun caused it to dry too quickly, so I couldn’t really wipe much off in some places.
The bottom door is the worst – the drawers actually turned out quite well. The paint on the door dried too quickly for me to wipe much off. I’m going to have to do more work on this the next time we’re out there. Now I’m wondering if I maybe I should just paint the whole thing white and be done with it.

You have more guts than I would, I’ve never been very good at doing stuff like this. I do like that piece though, would look great in my little house!
It’s from The Home Decorator’s Catalog. We bought it to go in the toilet section of our bathroom, which has just a toilet and nothing else. I decided I needed a place to keep extra toilet paper and maybe something I could put a silk plant on to make it feel less like a closet. It’s very tiny and fits behind the door.
I like the results…I can see there’s too much, perhaps, on that door, but nothing a bit of sanding and redoing cannot fix, right? And it’s def. nicer than orange.
I like it! Definitely much nicer than the original orange color.
See … I’m married to Mr. Can Do Everything, so either A ) He would do it or B ) He would fix what I messed up.
Good try, though.
