Spring Flowers
Posted by in GardeningI don’t have Martha’s green thumb (or cash to pay gardeners!), but I wanted to share some of the signs of spring from our gardens that I am enjoying. Bulbs, I can manage! Other than that, I put my family to shame. My grandfather and his brother began the family greenhouse business referenced in the link, based upon my great-grandfather’s farmland. It’s now run by my uncle and his fiance.

I love forsythia (I can’t believe I spelled that right on the first try!). It’s such a reminder and symbol of spring for me. Here in Pennsytucky we have a festival around it and the main attraction is eating donuts (called faschnaughts or some such; basically the German version of donuts).
Fastnachts are a huge tradition here in Buffalo during Lent. They are square or round fried donuts, almost like fried dough and then have powdered sugar, cinnamon and sugar, glaze, or just plain sugar on them. My grandmother used to make them, but now you can buy them in grocery stores everywhere during Lent. I wait for them every year!
Beautiful flowers, Brette!
Thanks! There is something about the first spring flowers that just lifts my mood.
