What Do You Have Too Much Of?

Posted by Brette in Organizing

I’m tied up with a new project I should be able to tell you all about very soon, but it means my Martha cooking time is limited. So I thought I would take a moment and reflect upon a growing problem in my kitchen. I am overrun with jellies/jams and mustards.

Here is the current list:

Jelly/Jam

strawberry jam

wild blueberry jam

apricot jam

orange marmalade

lingonberry jam

grape jelly

fireweed jelly

strawberry rhubarb jam

salmonberry jelly

apple pie jam

strawberry vanilla jam

passion fruit jelly

guava strawberry jelly

peach jam

damson plum jelly

rhubarb jam

blackberry jelly

Mustards

store brand yellow

Grey Pouopn country style Dijon

honey mustard

sharp hot

sharp and creamy

sweet hot

Rayes (a Martha’s Pick I haven’t used up)

Weber’s (a  local horseradish mustard)

Gulden’s brown

stone ground

sweet apple mustard

Clearly this is out of control, but the thing is we do use all of it.  Admittedly, I have a problem because I like to buy jelly on trips (damson plum from Cape Cod, guava, passion fruit from Hawaii) but people also give me inordinate amounts. Everyone in this house has an individual mustard preference, some requiring different mustards for different things, but I also tend to end up receiving a lot of mustards in gift baskets. And I just can’t bring myself to throw any out.

What is your kitchen overrun with?

  • This is funny! My answer, any sort of condiment, ketchup, brown sauce, mayonaise, salad cream, chutneys, you name it – we will have it in the fridge. Thankfully we only have two sorts of jam – strawberry and cherry, one marmalade (orange) and two types of Marmite. Your list was quite exhausting but it must be great to have so many options.

  • Condiments do tend to build up, that’s for sure. I had no idea I had so many of these until I actually went and made a list. I was pretty shocked. I knew there were tiny jars of jam from our trips lurking in the back corners of the fridge, but was pretty surprised to list so many. We have a refrigerator in the garage and I keep a lot of seldom used items out there. And some of these things are in the pantry unopened as of yet.

We just moved from our home of 17 yrs. And, yes, I had the same kind of amazing amount. But I totally purged them all, some 10 yrs. old!! From vacations, gift baskets, individual recipes, etc. It was painful, but a freeing event, I’d say! But now I’m totally exhausted and swear I will never move again!

  • I never want to move again either. The last move (more than 10 yrs ago) almost did me in. Moves are good for purging though, that’s for sure.

You said it! And we are still unpacking, 1 wk. later. And I’ve only cooked one meal thus far – a mixed bean (all leftover beans from various bags)soup w/ carrots & other veggies, and a smoked ham hock for flavor only. Not bad. 🙂
